FIVE SPORTS, ONE PACKAGE: WII SPORTS CLUB LAUNCHES IN STORES ON JULY 25

Online Multiplayer, Enhanced GamePad Controls and High-Def Graphics Among New Features in Wii U Game

Wii Sports Club Box Art

REDMOND, Wash., July 24, 2014 – It’s a full count. One more out will win you the game. Standing on the pitcher’s mound, you study the batter and aim for the outside corner. You take a deep breath and unleash the baseball toward home plate. The ball curves just as you planned. Suddenly and unexpectedly, the bat cracks and the ball soars into the air. You thrust your arms in the air, poised to catch the fly ball. Catch it and the game is over. You win. The ball falls closer and closer to your outstretched hands…

While this sounds like an intense game of real-life baseball, it is actually the experience anyone can have using the GamePad controller in Wii Sports Club, which arrives in stores on July 25. The Wii U game includes updated and reimagined versions of Tennis, Bowling, Golf, Baseball and Boxing from the original Wii Sports game for Wii, with each sport using Wii MotionPlus technology and new GamePad features for enhanced control.

The implementation of the Wii U GamePad controller brings some surprising and fun features to Wii Sports Club. In Baseball, for example, the pitcher aims a fastball, curveball, screwball or splitter by simply moving the GamePad around in real space and pressing a button to throw. If the ball gets hit in the air, players use the GamePad to follow and catch the fly ball – just like they would with a baseball glove. In Golf, players place the GamePad on the floor to see the ball they are about to hit on the screen of the GamePad. It will appear on the same surface shown in the game – on the fairway, in a sand trap or in the rough. After players swing their Wii Remote Plus controllers like a real golf club, the ball will “fly” from the GamePad screen to the main TV screen and toward the virtual pin. The added GamePad features elicit the same “You have to try this!” reactions generated after playing the original Wii Sports game.

“With so many features packed into Wii Sports Club, players of all ages will feel like they are playing the game for the first time,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Wii Sports Club is the definitive version of Wii Sports and the perfect showcase for the unique game-play experiences enabled by the Wii U GamePad controller.”

In a new online multiplayer mode, gamers from the same region who own the game and have a broadband Internet connection can play Wii Sports Club together. Players also can join a club to represent their regions and build online communities with fellow club members by sending tips, pep talks and other messages via Miiverse.

The retail version of Wii Sports Club launches in stores on July 25 at a suggested retail price of $39.99. The digital versions of all five sports are now available and can be purchased in the Nintendo eShop on Wii U. A 48-hour free trial of all five sports is also available in the Nintendo eShop on Wii U until Dec. 31.

MARIO KART 8 IS TOP-SELLING GAME IN JUNE, HAS SOLD MORE THAN 885,000 UNITS IN THE U.S.

Mario Kart 8

July 17, 2014 - After firing out of the gate at the end of May, Mario Kart 8 had an even stronger second lap. The game was the top-selling physical software SKU in the U.S. in June, and sold more than 470,000 physical and digital units. This brings its lifetime total to more than 885,000 units in the U.S. alone.

Mario Kart 8 is also driving new momentum for the Wii U platform and its library of great titles, which includes an industry-best 15 games with a Metacritic score of 85 or higher. Sales of hardware and software in June 2014 were up 233 percent and 373 percent, respectively, over June 2013. For the first half of the year, total sales of Wii U hardware and software have increased by 48 percent and 129 percent, respectively, over the same period in 2013.

“These results reinforce the power of the Mario Kart franchise and speak to a bright future for the Wii U platform,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “History has shown that Mario Kart games tend to have an extremely long tail. We fully expect Mario Kart 8 to continue to drive momentum for our hardware and software business through the holidays and into the foreseeable future.”

NPD Group

Nintendo 3DS also had a strong month: Hardware sales in June increased by more than 55 percent over sales in May, and Tomodachi Life sold more than 175,000 combined physical and digital units after launching on June 6.

Looking ahead to the rest of 2014, Wii U has a great lineup of upcoming games and amiibo, Nintendo’s foray into the toys-to-life category, that will help Nintendo build on its Mario Kart 8 momentum.

Notable titles on the way include: Hyrule Warriors (Sept. 26), Bayonetta 2 (October), Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (Holiday) and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Holiday). Likewise, three of the most anticipated games of the year are coming exclusively to Nintendo 3DS in 2014: Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS (Oct. 3) and Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire (Nov. 21).

*Data regarding physical sales of games in June are from the NPD Group. Data regarding digital downloads of games and combined physical/digital life-to-date numbers are from Nintendo’s internal sales figures. All numbers, unless otherwise stated, are specific to the United States only.

The missing entry in the classic Shin Megami Tensei RPG series, Shin Megami: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers, finally arrives in North America!

Never before released in North America, this long-awaited entry in the acclaimed Devil Summoner series takes players into a future in which technology and otherworldly forces meet in a macabre fusion of cyberpunk futurism and gothic horror. A first-person sci-fi RPG epic, Soul Hackers tells of a city held up as a beacon of humanity's triumph of technology, but with an infernal secret. In this would-be utopia, a group of hackers takes on a centuries-old mystic society, and a battle for control over humanity's fate is about to begin...

In a society originated from a bizarre marriage of technology and demonology, an unleashed evil—borne of an inconvenient truth—threatens to bring an end not just to the deceptive harmony, but to mankind itself.

Improved graphics marry with extensive voice acting, a host of technical enhancements, and 3D dungeon exploration to make Soul Hackers a natural fit to the Nintendo 3DS.

The portable COMP units allow players to tap into the tech-heavy world and can be upgraded to offer new features and abilities. In tandem with tech, demons can be recruited (through negotiation), leveled and even fused, giving the player new summoning potential in battle.

Nintendo's hub at San Diego Comic-Con will be located at the Nintendo Gaming Lounge on the first floor of the Marriott Marquis & Marina hotel, an area open to the general public, so even fans who don’t have a Comic-Con badge can get in on the fun. The playable games scheduled to appear include:

On July 25 and July 26, Nintendo will stream Nintendo Challenge Live, a stage show hosted from the Nintendo Gaming Lounge that features intense tournament competition and awesome game-play challenges from some of the hottest upcoming games on Nintendo platforms. Nintendo will be hosting its first-ever tournament for the Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS game. Tournament slots are limited for the one-day event, and fans will be able to sign up the day of the event on a first-come, first-served basis. The full tournament will be streamed at http://www.twitch.tv/nintendo. The tournament will be conducted using the E3 version of the game. This version represents a game still in development and may not represent the final quality and balance of the game, which launches on Oct. 3.

Mario Kart 8

Mario Kart 8 is already one of the best-selling Wii U games of all time, and the love for the game and franchise will be well-represented at Comic-Con. Racers who visit the Nintendo Gaming Lounge will be able to compete in local Mario Kart 8 competitions. The bracket-style competitions will pit 32 players against each other. The winner of each local competition will then be invited to take on racers around the world using the online tournament feature of Mario Kart 8. Players at home can join the online tournaments with a chance to face off against the local champions. The online tournament codes and schedule will be announced via Nintendo’s social media channels in the future.

Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8 aren’t the only franchises with unique activities at Comic-Con. Bayonetta fans will want to make sure they mark their calendars for a screening of the new animated film Bayonetta: Bloody Fate from FUNimation Entertainment. The stylized animated movie follows the powerful witch Bayonetta as she battles the forces of heaven to regain her memory. The feature film will screen Friday, July 25, at 9:35 p.m. PT in Marriott Hall Room 4 at the Marriott Marquis & Marina hotel. (A San Diego Comic-Con badge is required for entry.)

The Nintendo Gaming Lounge is located in the San Diego Ballroom on the first floor of the Marriott Marquis & Marina hotel at 333 W. Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA, 92101. The Nintendo Gaming Lounge will be open to the public from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. PT Thursday, July 24, to Saturday, July 26, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. PT Sunday, July 27. The Nintendo booth (No. 235) is located at the San Diego Convention Center at 111 W. Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA, 92101.
