Acclaimed flame-wielding platformer Nocturnal is getting a sequel with Nocturnal 2

Metroidvania adventure coming to Switch and PC in 2025

Indie developer Sunnyside Games is set to ignite the gaming world once again with the highly anticipated sequel, Nocturnal 2, to their acclaimed side-scrolling action game: Nocturnal. Nocturnal 2 is a fast-paced, juggle-based 2D Metroidvania and is set to release on Nintendo Switch and PC in 2025, promising to take players on a thrilling adventure through a forgotten island consumed by darkness.

With the original Nocturnal receiving rave reviews, with a score of 81/100 on Metacritic and a Strongly Recommended rating on OpenCritic, fans are eagerly awaiting the release of Nocturnal 2. And from what we know so far, their expectations will be exceeded.

One of the standout features of Nocturnal 2 is its unique fire system, which adds an extra layer of challenge and excitement to the gameplay. As the master of the Enduring Flame technique, players must keep their sword alight at all times by striking fire sources throughout the game. This not only helps to push back the darkness, but also unlocks stylish abilities and spells to aid in the fight against enemies.

“We were pleased with the reception to Nocturnal, but wanted to do more with the series,” said Gabriel Sonderegger, co-founder of Sunnyside Games. “This time we’re expanding the scope into a full-blown Metroidvania, full of non-linear gameplay, secrets, all new enemies, and an expanded arsenal of fire-based abilities.”

And for fans of hand-drawn animation, Nocturnal 2 is sure to impress. The game features stunning hand-drawn visuals, immersing players in a beautifully crafted 2D world. But Nocturnal 2 is not just about looks, it also offers a deep and engaging story with multiple paths, uncovering secrets and revelations for those who seek them out.

As players explore the dark depths and towering heights of Ytash, they will encounter an array of challenges and enemies trying to snuff out their Flame. This is where the fiery abilities come into play, allowing players to hurl enemies and juggle them into ashes with impressive fire-based attacks. And with the option to mix and match Fire Gems to unlock new spells, the possibilities for combat combinations are endless.

Nocturnal 2 is not just a sequel, but a complete overhaul and expansion of the original game. With its Metroidvania-style gameplay, hand-drawn animation, unique fire system, and secrets waiting to be uncovered, this game is set to take the series to new heights.

So mark your calendars for 2025 and get ready to ignite your sword and journey through the world of Nocturnal 2. With its release on Nintendo Switch and PC, fans of the series and new players alike will have the opportunity to experience the adrenaline-fueled action and immersive world of Nocturnal 2.
